Geologists are individuals who perform different Geo-science related functions related to earth science. They are responsible for discovering and assessing the location of mineral deposits, evaluating the soil condition, determining quality and quantity of mineral deposits and etc. in short, we can say they are scientists who conduct study of the earth’s crust to paint the accurate picture of its history, composition and structure.

As a geologist you will have to work closely in study of causes and proximity of calamities like tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and storms.  If you like to spend a lot of time outdoor and work closely with Mother Nature, a career as a geologist is ideal for you.

Basic roles, duties & responsibilities

So, what does a geologist do? The roles, duties and responsibilities of geologists are very diverse which depends upon different factors like type of organization, size of employer, and nature of project influence the functions. Here we have listed out basic roles/responsibilities of geologists:

As a geologist, you will approximately work 40 to 45 hours a week, mostly. You may also have to work long extra hours and during weekends to meet closing date.

Qualification and training

Often times 4 years bachelor’s degree in geology is required to pursue this career. Other relevant degrees relating to geology and earth science can also be considered for this job.  Degree in any of following subjects increases your odds:

To pursue career in geology, only HND without a degree is not enough. To be a competent geologist you need to have proven proficiency in physical, mathematical, earth and applied science.
